PSG-Dortmund: Confusion over penalties as Orsato modifies his stance on Dembele

During the second half of Paris Saint-Germain vs. Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League semi-final second leg, Italian referee Daniele Orsato had to make a crucial decision. He first indicated that Ousmane Dembele should have been given a penalty, but he later changed his mind and gave a free kick instead.

Orsato nearly imposes a fine

PSG was starting to put significant pressure on Dortmund in the last third of the match, with the score for the night standing at 1-0 in favor of Dortmund and 2-0 in favor of the Germans overall.

After sixty-four minutes, Dembele attempted to weave his way into the Dortmund area, only to be clipped on the edge of the box by Mats Hummels.

Orsato, who had previously officiated Real Madrid vs. Man City in the second leg of the quarterfinal last month, first signaled a penalty from the spot but later changed his mind and gave a free kick on the outskirts of the box.

His all-Italian squad in the VAR booth confirmed his choice, causing a brief pause.

Even though Dembele started his tackle inside the box, Orsato’s second ruling proved to be accurate, as the replays show. The Hummels made touch with the German player precisely on the boundary of the area.

Marco Asensio shot the free-kick into the wall after Massimiliano Irrati and Paolo Valeri, his assistant, finally gave the go-ahead.
