Novak Djokovic lost his World No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner after the French Open. The Serbian had to withdraw from his quarterfinal match at Roland Garros due to a knee injury, allowing the Italian to take over as the top-ranked men’s player in the world. However, there is a possibility that Djokovic could get back to the World No. 1 spot before the end of the season.
Jannik Sinner is currently the World No. 1 with 8,770 points to his name. Djokovic is second with 8,460 points and Carlos Alcaraz is third with 7,950. However, Sinner is likely to improve his points tally as he continues to impress at the Cincinnati Open. The Italian was knocked out in the second round in Cincinnati last year and already finds himself in the third round this year, which will add more points to his name.
Novak Djokovic has opted out of competing at the Cincinnati Masters. The Serbian is currently enjoying his time off tennis after winning the Olympic gold medal in Paris after losing the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz. The 37-year-old was the defending champion in Cincinnati, but his decision to not defend his title will cost him 1000 points. Sinner could go further clear of the Serbian if he goes deep at the Cincinnati Masters.
Carlos lcaraz’s loss to Gael Monfils in the second round at the Cincinnati Open has ensured that Djokovic will be the World No. 2 going into the US Open. The 37-year-old will start the tournament as the defending champion and defend his 2000 points in New York.
Novak Djokovic will have to win both the US Open and the ATP Finals if he is to re-claim his World No. 1 spot from Sinner. The Serbian will have a chance to obtain 2000 points and could potentially win 1500 more at the ATP Finals.
On the other hand, Djokovic would hope that Sinner loses points in the same tournaments. The Italian lost in the round of 16 at the US Open last year and will aim to go deep into the tournament this time. Sinner will win more points if he manages to make it to the quarter-final at the US Open and improve on his runner-up place at the ATP Finals.
As things stand, Novak Djokovic will need everything to go his way if he is to reclaim his World No. 1 spot from Sinner. However, there is a chance for that to happen if the Serbian defends both his US Open and ATP Finals titles in the coming weeks.
Novak Djokovic set to compete at the US Open after his Olympic heroics
Novak Djokovic finally won the only title missing from his cabinet at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Serbian star defeated Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to complete a Career Golden Slam by winning the Olympic gold medal for Serbia in the men’s singles event. Shortly after that, the Serbian announced that he would opt out of the Cincinnati Masters and return for the US Open.
Djokovic had already admitted in the past that he is picking and choosing tournaments to compete in as he looks after his aging body. The Serbian miraculously recovered from knee surgery before Wimbledon and won the Olympic gold without dropping a set.
The Olympic title win was the first title for Djokovic in 2024 and the Serbian will be keen to continue his fine form in New York. The 37-year-old is certain to compete at the US Open and the ATP Finals at the end of the year.
