3 unscripted moments from WWE WrestleMania 39

WWE WrestleMania 39 is remembered fondly by many wrestling fans. The marquee event kicked off the rivalry between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns and featured many unexpected title changes and returns. However, not everything went according to plan.

The showpiece event took place at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on April 1 and 2, 2023. Night One featured eight matches, with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn ending The Usos’ legendary Undisputed Tag Team Championship reign in the main event.

Meanwhile, Night Two had seven matches, with the headlining act being an Undisputed WWE Universal Title match between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes. Although The Show of Shows was highly regarded, it also featured several unplanned moments.

For this list, we will look at three unscripted moments from WWE WrestleMania 39:

#3. Finn Balor received 14 staples during his match with Edge

One of the heated feuds heading into The Showcase of The Immortals last year was between Finn Balor and Edge (FKA Adam Copeland). The WWE Hall of Famer was kicked out of The Judgment Day in June 2022 after Finn Balor’s inclusion. The next few months saw the former WWE Superstar feud with the group, leading to Beth Phoenix receiving a Con-Chair-To following an “I Quit” Match between The Demon and The Rated R Superstar at Extreme Rules 2022.

The bitter rivals went head-to-head in a Hell in a Cell Match at WrestleMania 39. The match was highly anticipated since it featured the return of Balor’s “The Demon” persona. However, the action had to be momentarily stopped after Finn was busted open after being hit by a ladder.

The Judgment Day member immediately asked doctors to staple him so that he could finish the match. There have been cases where injuries were scripted to add more heat to the heel or sympathy to the babyface, but that wasn’t the case for this match. Later, the erstwhile Edge defeated Balor via pinfall.

#2. Snoop Dogg had to improvise a match against a former WWE Champion

Shane McMahon made a surprise return at WrestleMania 39 and squared off with the event’s co-host, The Miz, in an impromptu match. Unfortunately for The Prodigal Son, he tore his quadriceps muscle during the initial stages of the match. However, WrestleMania 39 co-host Snoop Dogg proved his professionalism by stepping in last minute.

After Shane was safely escorted out of the ring, Snoop challenged the former WWE Champion to a match. Snoop Dogg and The Miz traded a few shots before Snoop nailed a People’s Elbow to pick up the victory.

#1. Dominik Mysterio did something unplanned to his family at ringside during his match against Rey Mysterio

One of the most personal rivalries in WWE history has been between Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio. The father and son duo had several months to build the feud, which even involved their other family members. The duo squared off in a singles match on The Grandest Stage of Them All last year.

At one point in the match, Dirty Dom threw a cup of water on his sister’s (Aalyah) face. In a recent appearance on Logan Paul’s IMPAULSIVE, The Judgment Day member revealed that he was supposed to just throw the water at her chest but was worried it wouldn’t get much reaction. Hence, he improvised on the spot and spilled the water on her face.

Later, The Master of 619 pinned his son to pick up the victory.
