Retired soccer player Danny Simpson looks to have already decided on his next opponent ahead of his boxing debut. Simpson called out Irish professional footballer James McClean, which quickly elicited a response from the latter.
Simpson is scheduled to make his boxing debut against YouTuber Danny Aarons at the Misfits event on Aug. 31 at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. The ex-Manchester United star stepped in as a short-term replacement for TikToker Brandon Beavis, who withdrew himself from the bout due to an injury.
Ahead of his fight, in an interview with Boxing Social, Simpson mentioned McClean as one of the football players he would like to face in a boxing match. He stated:
”Me and James McClean had a few little bust-ups. He’s left wing, I was right-back. He wants to fight everyone so I say him because I know if he ever sees us he’ll probably fancy himself. He was scrapping a bit at a Chelsea player recently in pre-season so he’s still at it. I remember I was at Newcastle, he was at Sunderland and the two rivals and we always just had a bit, so yeah me and James McClean would probably have a good scrap.”
In response, McClean posted an Instagram story, asking Simpson to focus on his upcoming fight and call him out at the end of the season, writing:
”Danny Simpson – win your upcoming fight first and give me a shout about the summer when the season’s over. Until then if you need any sparring partners let me know, I’m only down the motorway.” [H/t: Goal]
The two previously engaged in a physical altercation in 2012 during a full-scale riot between the two teams that was started by McClean’s challenge on Simpson.
