Day 2 of the US Open 2024 will be played on August 27, with the remainder of the first-round matches being played. The top half of the women’s singles draw will be in action in Flushing Meadows.
Top seed Iga Swiatek will look to start her campaign to win a sixth Major title in her career as she takes on Kamila Rakhimova in the opening round. Among other top seeds, fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina will be in action as she will take on Destanee Alava in the opening round.
The day will also feature former US Open champions Emma Raducanu and Bianca Andreescu begin their respective campaigns. American hopefuls Danielle Collins and Jessica Pegula will also begin their title bids for their Maiden Major title.
Let’s look at some of the matches slated to be played on Day 2 of the 2024 US Open.
#6 Katie Volynets vs Karolina Muchova
Last year’s US Open semi-finalist Karolina Muchova will begin her New York campaign this year by taking on local favorite Katie Volynets in the opening round. Owing to injury, Muchova has played at only a handful of events this year. However, the Czech player reached the final of the Palermo Ladies Open, losing to Qinwen Zheng. She last played at the Cincinnati Open, where she lost to Jessica Pegula in the second round.
Katie Volynets has not had any results of significance in the 2024 season. Her only good result came at the Thailand Open, where she reached the quarter-final. She has been on a streak of first-round losses, in her last four events. Her last appearance was at the Tennis in the Land event, losing to Sofia Kenin in the opening round.
This will be the first time the two players will be playing each other on the Tour. Given the current form of both players, Muchova should be able to win the match.
Predicted Winner- Karolina Muchova
#5. Katie Boulter vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich
31st-seeded Katie Boulter will play Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Day 2 of the 2024 US Open. Boulter last played at the Cincinnati Open where she lost her opening-round match to Magda Linette. But overall, the British player has been in fine form in 2024, winning two titles at the Rothesay Open (beating Karolina Pliskova in the final), and the San Diego Open (beating Marta Kostyuk in the final).
Aliaksandra Sasnovich’s season in 2024 has not been anything of note. The Belarusian player has often struggled to qualify for the main draws of the WTA events. However, she had one successful tournament, reaching the final of the Hungarian Grand Prix, losing to Diana Shnaider.
This will be the first meeting between the two players. Provided she is the higher-seeded player, Boulter is the favorite to win this match.
Predicted winner- Katie Boulter
#4. Diana Shnaider vs Nadia Podoroska
18th-seeded Diana Shnaider will begin her 2024 US Open campaign, taking on Nadia Podoroska in the opening round. Shnaider has been one of the rising stars of the WTA Tour this year, winning three titles on all three surfaces. She last played at the Cincinnati Open, where she lost to Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16. However, before that, she reached the semi-final of the Canadian Open, losing to Jessica Pegula.
Nadia Podoroska’s form has not been very good in 2024, as the Argentine player has mostly made first-round exits at almost all of the events that she has played. She was last seen in action at the Monterrey Open, where she had another opening round exit, losing to Magdalena Frech.
The head-to-head between the two players is 0-0 as this will be the duo’s first meeting. The current form suggests Shnaider should be able to win the match
Predicted Winner- Diana Shnaider
# 3. Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Elina Avanesyan
22nd-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia will play Elina Avanesyan in the opening round of the 2024 US Open. The Brazilian is coming on the back of her most successful event in 2024, as she reached the final of the Tennis in the Land event, losing to McCartney Kessler. Apart from that, she reached the semi-final of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this year.
Elina Avanesyan’s 2024 form has been moderate. The Armenian has made some decent runs at events, but mostly it has been early round exits. She reached the final at the Iasi Open but had to retire against Mirra Andreeva. She last played at the Monterrey Open, losing to Elina Svitolina in the second round.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, with Haddad Maia the clear favorite to win.
Predicted winner- Beatriz Haddad Maia
#2. Anna Kalinskaya vs Lauren Davis
15th-seeded Anna Kalinskaya will get her US Open campaign underway as she takes on local favorite Lauren Davis. Kalinskaya is having a breakthrough season in 2024, reaching the finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships (lost to Jasmine Paolini), and the EcoTrans Ladies Open (lost to Jessica Pegula). The Russian player last played at the Cincinnati Open, losing to Paula Badosa in the second round.
Lauren Davis has not won a single main draw match at any of the WTA events in 2024. The American is ranked beyond 400 and is still trying to find her place at the highest level. She last played at the Tennis in the Land event, where she lost in the first round to Viktoriya Tomova.
Kalinskaya and Davis had not played each other previously, but being a top 20 player, the Russian was the firm favorite in this match.
Predicted winner- Anna Kalinskaya
#1. Mirra Andreeva vs Camila Osorio
21st-seeded Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva will begin her US Open campaign by taking on Camila Osorio of Colombia in the opening round. The young Russian has already made her mark on the WTA Tour by winning her maiden title at the Iasi Open and reaching the semi-final of the French Open. She last played at the Cincinnati Open, where she pushed the World No. 1 Iga Swiatek to three sets, eventually losing the match.
Camila Osorio has had a moderate season in 2024. The Colombian has won a title in the season, winning the Copa Colsanitas. She was last seen in action at the Monterrey Open, losing to Emma Navarro in the Round of 16.
Andreeva and Osorio have played each other once previously, with the Russian winning the qualifying-round match at the 2023 French Open. Given the current rankings, Andreeva is the favorite to win the match.
