Steph Curry suffered a finger injury during the Warriors’ preseason game against the Kings on Friday night. He exited the contest with 2:57 left in the second quarter with Rick Celebrini, the Warriors’ Director of Medicine and Performance, and didn’t return to start the second half.
The Warriors announced Curry jammed his finger in the first half and is working out in the weight room. He played 15 minutes in the first half, tallying six points, three rebounds and four assists.
De’Anthong Melton started in his place to start the second half. The Warriors trailed 59-55 entering the halftime break.
It doesn’t seem like a concerning issue that could keep Curry out for long. His exit seemed precautionary because he went through his post-game routines in the locker room.
NBC Sports also reported that a source within the Warriors confirmed it isn’t a serious ailment.
It’s a big relief for the Warriors and their fanbase, as Steph Curry’s health is crucial for their bounce-back season after missing the playoffs last year.
According to the Warriors, the X-rays returned negative and he is listed as day-to-day. Meanwhile, coach Steve Kerr said the plan was for Curry to play in the third quarter for the first time this season, but the injury held him back.
Steph Curry has had a relatively healthy run since last season
Steph Curry has dodged injury troubles since the start of last season. The Warriors superstar played 74 of 82 games in the regular season and suited up for Team USA this past summer, leading them to a gold medal win. He’s also been part of all three of the Dubs’ preseason games.
With Golden State entering next year among the underdogs, Curry’s health could prove vital. The Warriors don’t have a legitimate second option on the team to support the two-time MVP after parting ways with Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson in consecutive offseason.
Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins are the Warriors’ two best options, but neither have shown they can be relied upon as much in the past couple of years. Curry’s availability might directly impact the Warriors’ ceiling this season, especially if they remain put at the trade deadline after losing out on targets like Paul George and Lauri Markkanen, who are now out of their radar.
George signed a four-year max deal with the Sixers, while Markkanen signed an extension with the Jazz.
