Anthony Davis took a veiled shot at naysayers after his dominant defensive performance helped the LA Lakers open their 2024-25 NBA season with a 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday (Oct. 22). The big recorded a double-double on opening night as he racked up 36 points and 16 rebounds. The highlight, however, was his animated celebration when he swatted off the ball thrice — one of them when he blocked reigning DPOY Rudy Gobert.
Speaking postgame, Davis was asked about his blocks and he shot back with a subtle response.
“Defensive Player of the Year type stuff.”
Davis was one of the DPOY contenders last season with his efficient play on that side of the floor. But in the end, it was Gobert who took the silverware, making it the third time he won the honors. Soon after, the Lakers star was vocal about the snub when he said he’ll never get it.
On Tuesday, Davis played a vital role on the defensive end grabbing 16 rebounds, and recording three blocks. He took over in the final quarter on the offensive end with his relentless scoring. The result was an LA win on the opening night that last came in 2016.

Anthony Davis had a unique achievement en route to his 36-point blitz against Minnesota on Tuesday. The center now has the distinction of being the player to notch up at least 30 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists & 3 blocks in a season opener thrice.
He achieved the feat in 2016-17 and 2018-19 when he was with the New Orleans Pelicans. He later repeated the feat a few hours ago and two of the three efforts translated to wins.
Davis comes off a solid 2023-24 NBA season and a gold medal run with Team USA. He was regarded as the hub of the Lakers offense by new head coach JJ Redick earlier this season, and with the players finding a way to get the ball to their dominant two-way center often, the win over the T-Wolves comes as a good start, and a key insight into his role this season.
