Cristiano Ronaldo has often spoken highly of the atmosphere at Celtic Park, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner naming it as one of his favorite stadiums despite having played at some of the world’s most iconic venues. Over the course of his illustrious career, Ronaldo has graced stadiums like Old Trafford, Santiago Bernabéu, Anfield, Camp Nou, and Wembley. He’s also won major trophies at legendary venues, including the UEFA Champions League at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow and the Olympic Stadium in Ukraine, and he lifted Euro 2016 with Portugal at Stade de France in Paris.
However, when asked in a 2020 interview with Celtic’s official website about the best atmosphere he’s experienced, Ronaldo singled out Celtic Park. “The Celtic fans are incredible. It is always great to play there,” he said, highlighting the passionate support of the Scottish club’s fanbase.
Despite not playing in one of Europe’s top five leagues, Celtic boasts an exceptional following, with their fans creating an electrifying atmosphere at their historic stadium. Legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, too, praised Celtic Park, calling it “THE best” atmosphere he’d ever experienced. Ferguson recalled a conversation with former Manchester United players Nemanja Vidić and Ronaldo, where they both agreed that the atmosphere at Parkhead was the best they had ever encountered. “Credit to the supporters for that because they don’t half raise the roof,” Ferguson added. “It’s obvious the Celtic players react to it given the results they’ve had. You are going to have to run that extra yard or you will soon be found out by them.”
Ronaldo’s Record Against Celtic
Ronaldo faced Celtic three times during his career, all while playing for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. His first encounter with the Scottish side came in the 2006-07 group stage. Ronaldo was rested for the home game in September 2006, which United won 3-2. He started in the return leg at Celtic Park in November 2006, but United suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Ronaldo’s next meeting with Celtic came during his final season at Manchester United in 2008. United triumphed 3-0 in the home leg in October, although Ronaldo didn’t score. In the return fixture at Celtic Park, Ronaldo assisted Ryan Giggs for the equalizing goal in a 1-1 draw.
Celtic’s Current Standing
Celtic are the reigning Scottish Premiership champions and continue to build on their strong domestic form, with their passionate supporters continuing to make Celtic Park a difficult place for any team to visit.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s admiration for Celtic Park and its fans is a testament to the unique atmosphere that the stadium provides, earning it a special place in his heart, despite the many legendary arenas he’s experienced throughout his career.
