Nenad Zimonjic, Novak Djokovic’s mentor and close friend, has shared his thoughts on Djokovic’s decision to appoint Andy Murray as his new coach. Zimonjic, who briefly coached Djokovic earlier in 2024 after his split with Goran Ivanisevic, expressed confidence in Djokovic’s ability to make the right decisions throughout his career. He praised Djokovic’s astuteness, noting that the Serb has consistently made smart choices in terms of his coaching and team dynamics.
Zimonjic acknowledged that this new coaching partnership between Djokovic and Murray would be a new challenge for Murray, as it marks a shift from his long playing career to taking on a coaching role. However, Zimonjic is confident that Murray’s vast experience and understanding of the sport, having worked with different coaches himself and navigating similar situations as a player, will be valuable assets to the team. He also emphasized that the support of the entire coaching team, which includes other experienced members, would make this transition smoother for Murray.
Regarding whether Murray might become a permanent part of Djokovic’s team, Zimonjic pointed out that this decision would depend on how well the collaboration goes during the 2025 Australian Open and Murray’s willingness to commit to the demanding travel schedule after years of being on tour as a player.
Zimonjic also highlighted the strong bond between Djokovic and Murray, noting that they have known each other since their youth and have often competed against each other. He believes that their similar playing styles and the deep familiarity between them will enhance the partnership. Zimonjic mentioned that Murray’s tactical acumen would bring a fresh perspective to Djokovic’s game, which could prove beneficial.
Expressing his support, Zimonjic said, “I wish them good luck. I was a good friend with Andy and I practiced many times with him and even had the chance to play doubles with him in a couple of tournaments. It’s exciting to see and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.”
Meanwhile, Murray has stated that he is committed to helping Djokovic get into the “best possible shape” for the 2025 Australian Open, expressing excitement about the opportunity to work with the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
