Two Chelsea players are cited by Liverpool legend Steve Nicol as the reasons he would not consider the Blues “title contenders” this season.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has expressed doubts about Chelsea’s ability to sustain a Premier League title challenge this season. While discussing Chelsea’s recent form on ESPN FC, Nicol mentioned his concerns over goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and defender Wesley Fofana, suggesting that these positions could hinder the club’s title aspirations.

Sanchez, who joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion for £25 million in 2022, has played 13 Premier League matches this season but has kept only three clean sheets and conceded 14 goals. Nicol criticized his performances, questioning his reliability as Chelsea’s first-choice keeper.

Nicol also voiced concerns over Fofana, who has returned to full fitness after an anterior cruciate ligament injury and has started every league match this season. While Fofana has established himself as a key player, Nicol remains unconvinced about his overall impact, particularly in the context of a title charge.

On the other hand, after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City on December 1, Jamie Carragher, another Liverpool legend, suggested that Chelsea could finish ahead of City this season. Carragher praised the energy of Arsenal and Chelsea, mentioning that Manchester City might struggle to keep up, especially without reinforcing their midfield in January.

Currently, Chelsea are in third place with 25 points from 13 matches, while Liverpool lead the table with 34 points from the same number of games.
