Manchester United are reportedly targeting Napoli’s goalkeeper Alex Meret, who is set to become a free agent at the end of his current contract in the summer of 2025. The 27-year-old has been one of Serie A’s top goalkeepers in recent years, playing a key role in Napoli’s 2023 Serie A title win and their 2019-20 Coppa Italia victory. Manchester United are said to be eyeing him as a potential Bosman move, although they will likely face competition from Inter Milan, who are also interested in the Italian shot-stopper.
Meret could provide strong competition for Manchester United’s current goalkeepers, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, with the possibility of replacing Bayindir as the backup keeper. Meret, who came through the Udinese youth ranks, has made 189 appearances for Napoli, keeping 63 clean sheets and conceding 209 goals in all competitions.
Meanwhile, former England and Liverpool defender Neil Ruddock has suggested that Manchester United should offload several senior players, including Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, and Casemiro, to help with the club’s long-term plans. Ruddock believes that players over the age of 30, like Maguire, Evans, and Casemiro, may not fit into United’s future strategy. Both Maguire and Evans are in the final year of their contracts, while Casemiro, 32, could be sold next summer, with potential interest from Saudi Pro League clubs.
