5 players who will play their last US Open in 2024 ft. Danielle Collins, Dominic Thiem

The last Grand Slam of the year, the 2024 US Open, will kick off on August 26 and conclude on September 8. The tournament will serve as the final major tournament for several big names in the tennis world.

Reigning champions Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff will be back in action to defend their titles at Flushing Meadows. Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Aryna Sabalenka will also headline the tournament. Some tennis players will also compete in their last Grand Slam at the US Open this year.

Let’s take a look at five players who will play in their final US Open in 2024:

Donald Young will hang up his racket after the 2024 US Open at the age of 35. The American recently switched to pickleball and last played a professional tennis match in September 2023. The biggest moment of his tennis career came at the 2017 French Open with Santiago Gonzalez, where they finished as the runners-up in the men’s doubles category.

Young will once again take to the tennis courts in New York to play in his final tennis Grand Slam and compete in the mixed doubles category with compatriot Taylor Townsend. Young and Townsend have competed in mixed doubles at the US Open four times and reached the semifinals in 2014.

#4 Wesley Koolhof

Doubles specialist Wesley Koolhof has announced that he will retire from the sport at the end of the year at the age of 35. The Dutch star reached the World No. 1 doubles ranking in November 2022 and has won two Grand Slams in the format – the mixed doubles title at the 2022 French Open with Ena Shibahara and the men’s doubles title at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships with Neal Skupski.

In 2024, Koolhof has paired up with Nikola Mektic and emerged victorious at the ASB Classic in Auckland, ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, and Indian Wells Masters. Koolhof will compete in his final Grand Slam tournament in New York and will link up with Mektic to feature in men’s doubles as the 10th seed.

Argentine Diego Schwartzman has announced he will draw curtains on his tennis career at the upcoming Argentina Open in February 2025. This means the 32-year-old will play in his last US Open this year. Schwartzman wasn’t able to qualify for the main draw at the Australian Open, French Open, or Wimbledon after failing to get past the qualifying round.

The former World No. 8 will also have to go through the qualifying route to make it into the main draw in New York. He has a good track record at the tournament, reaching the quarterfinals in 2017 and 2019.

#2 Danielle Collins

Danielle Collins shocked the tennis world when she announced in January that she would retire from the sport at the end of the season amid ongoing health battles with rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis. Since then, she has reached the peak of her tennis career, winning titles at the WTA 500 Charleston Open and WTA 1000 Miami Open.

Collins has not changed her mind about retirement and is determined to end her career on a high. That includes making the most of her final US Open appearance. The American’s best performance in New York came in 2022 when she reached the fourth round. She will be seeded ninth in the women’s singles draw this year.

#1 Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem will be the biggest star to bid farewell to his Grand Slam career at the 2024 US Open. The former World No. 3’s last professional tournament will be the Vienna Open in October. However, before that, he will participate in the US Open and compete in the men’s singles main draw via a wildcard.

Dominic Theim’s biggest success came at Flushing Meadows when he defeated Alexander Zverve to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the tournament in 2020. The Austrian has also reached three other Grand Slam finals (Roland Garros x2 and Australian Open x1).
