Chelsea keeping tabs on ex-Manchester United star amid Liverpool links: Reports

Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes, who has impressed for Lille and England recently, is being monitored by Premier League giants Chelsea, according to reports from Caught Offside. Manager Enzo Maresca has been impressed with how Gomes has developed after leaving United in 2020.

Gomes could not quite cement a spot in the first team at Old Trafford and left the club permanently in 2021 for greener pastures. He has since been impressive for Lille, scoring nine and assisting 19 goals in 123 appearances.

Reports from Give Me Sport also indicate that Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are interested in the diminutive midfielder, while United are not too averse to the idea of bringing him back to Old Trafford themselves

mber this year, reported that Liverpool were interested in signing Gomes. Chelsea, however, had the option of signing Gomes when he first left United, as reported by Simon Philips (via Substack).

At this stage, Chelsea are enticed by what the 24-year-old brings to the table and will hope to lure him with exciting offers in the January transfer window.

Gomes was impressive in his most recent outing for England against Finland in the UEFA Nations League, shielding his defenders in central midfield and keeping possession when needed the most.

His ability to pass the ball into the final third and create spaces for his more attack-minded teammates was applauded by England manager Lee Carsley. Gomes also held his own during one-on-one duels and tackles.

Chelsea are currently 4th in the Premier League table

Chelsea look like they have a definitive project at hand under Maresca this season, and this has also translated into tangible results for them. They are placed fourth in the league table with 14 points to their name at the moment.

New manager Maresca has brought a lot of stability to the club, and left them miles ahead of arch-rivals Manchester United, who are struggling in the 14th position on the league table.

Liverpool, who were also keen on bagging the signature of Gomes, are the leaders of the Premier League at the moment, but are closely shadowed by Manchester City. The two clubs have 18 and 17 points respectively.
