Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas has seen his reduced child support payment to ex Laura Govan paying dividends as another son of his, Aloni, is showing promise on the court. He is seemingly basking in it, even finding time to make light of it on social media.
The three-time All-Star took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a video clip of seventh-grader Aloni putting up buckets against older and taller defenders while making a video reference to child support payment. He captioned it with:
“Me paying child support.”
While he has made it known that he does not mind paying more money as support for his kids, Gilbert Arenas, who reportedly earned $163 million during his playing days, saw his monthly payment reduced to $7,000 from $44,000 a month. Here’s what Arenas said about getting the payment reduced:
“I bumped it up to $35K and then I paid for school on top of that which made it $44K. I was originally at $20K, and I went up to $44K. A month later, she [Laura Govan] fouled again. She figured that at 44 from him, she could tell the judge she needed more.
“The judge was like, you know that I have to go by what’s on paper. So if you are going to keep coming here, I will have to drop it down to the real number. Eventually, the judge went from $44k to $7,100.
It came after a judge back in 2017 supposedly ruled that after considering the arguments of both sides and what was presented to him, including how Arenas and Govan’s financial documents were not fully accurate, it was only appropriate to reduce the amount.
Meanwhile, Aloni’s game has many excited, touting him as next to watch out for after older brother Alijah, who is a star guard at Chatworth High School in California and is being eyed by big collegiate schools like Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, California and Fresno State.
Gilbert Arenas gets flak for comments on new father Rudy Gobert
Gilbert Arenas faced some backlash earlier this year for his comments on Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star big man Rudy Gobert skipping a playoff game to witness the birth of his first child.
He spoke about it on his Gil’s Arena podcast on May 6, saying Gobert was “wrong” in choosing not to play in Game 2 of their Western Conference semifinal series against the Denver Nuggets.
Gilbert Arenas said:
“It’s a baby, bro. It’s gonna be there when you get back. I’m just saying. Whatever you think you about to do with the baby, he’s gonna be asleep. He can get skin-to-skin in two days.”
Gilbert Arenas was criticized for his comments, saying it was insensitive and that he missed the whole point of parenthood. Some, meanwhile, blasted him for his own fatherhood journey, pointing how he “abandoned” his children and then-pregnant fiancee Laura Govan.
