Boris Becker supported Rio Ferdinand’s positive reaction to Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as the manager of the England men’s football team. While Tuchel’s appointment faced criticism from fans and former players who believed the role should go to an Englishman, Ferdinand expressed no such concerns.
After England’s defeat to Spain in the UEFA Euro 2024 final, their manager at the time Gareth Southgate resigned and the FA began its search for a new manager. Lee Carsley served as interim manager, but on Wednesday, October 16, the FA announced German coach Thomas Tuchel as Southgate’s successor.
The appointment sparked criticism, with fans and former players like Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher arguing that the national team should be led by an English manager. However, Rio Ferdinand shared a positive reaction on social media. The former Manchester United and England defender said:
“I know for a fact these players will be sitting there ringing each other saying ‘what’s he like?’. Mason, Mason Mount, what’s he like? Saka at his club with Kai Havertz, 100%, they’re calling these guys. Declan Rice will be doing the same.”
“It will invigorate some, galvanize some players. There’ll be a little bit of apprehension, a bit of anxiety creeping in. But, I’m sure he’ll go in there, settle in on Day 1 and talk them through how he’s going to get them to be winning a trophy,” he added.
German tennis legend Boris Becker, an avid follower of various sports, including football and the NBA, backed Ferdinand’s reaction. Becker reshared Ferdinand’s video and wrote:
