Roger Federer’s former coach cites Rafael Nadal’s humility as his “biggest liability,” saying, “I wonder how Rafael Nadal didn’t actually have a bigger ego.”

Paul Annacone, Roger Federer’s former coach, recently shared his reflections on Rafael Nadal’s illustrious career, particularly focusing on what he sees as the only downside in the Spaniard’s game. Annacone, who had ample opportunity to observe Nadal as a rival to Federer, praised Nadal’s humility and graciousness, but also pointed out how these qualities could sometimes hold him back from playing with the full intensity his game demanded.

During a recent appearance on the ‘Tennis Channel Inside-In’ podcast, Annacone explained that Nadal’s humility, while being one of his greatest assets, was also a potential drawback. He suggested that Nadal’s modesty sometimes hindered him from stepping onto the court with the aggressive mindset necessary to dominate his opponents. Annacone said:

“Rafa’s only downside was also his biggest asset. His only downside was his humility, and that’s also his biggest asset. There are times where I would look at him and wonder how he didn’t actually have a bigger ego… He was always so gracious and so humble about what he’s doing that sometimes that hindered his ability to step on a court and just crush the ball.”

Annacone also reflected on Nadal’s mental approach, noting that when the Spaniard felt vulnerable, he tended to hold back from unleashing his usual intensity, which could impact his play. He pointed to Nadal’s final match against Botic van de Zandschulp at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals as an example, where Nadal’s ball lacked its usual aggressiveness, partly due to his humble nature.

Annacone further explained:

“When Rafa was vulnerable, he didn’t crush the ball… he didn’t just walk on that court and start ripping balls everywhere… Because of that humility, he didn’t always play with the full intensity required.”

Despite this, Annacone emphasized that this humility also contributed to Nadal’s remarkable legacy, and he noted that if he had to choose, he would prefer that balance over the ego-driven approach of many players.

The Challenge of Facing Nadal

In the same interview, Annacone discussed the challenge of devising strategies to counter Nadal’s strengths while coaching Federer. He described facing Nadal as the ultimate challenge and relished the task of crafting plans to make the Spanish legend uncomfortable.

“There’s no bigger challenge… and it was always fun to try to sit there and problem solve and figure out what Roger could do to make him uncomfortable,” Annacone said.

He spoke highly of Federer as one of the most gifted athletes in tennis and enjoyed the contrast between the two legends.

Federer’s Tribute to Nadal

Annacone also reflected on the emotional farewell message Federer shared for Nadal, following his retirement. He highlighted the deep mutual respect the two shared, underlining the extraordinary careers they both had and the legacy they created. The tribute resonated with many, including fellow players like Maria Sharapova, Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz, and Nadal’s sister, Maribel, who all expressed admiration for their iconic rivalry.

Annacone’s comments serve as a reminder of Nadal’s profound impact on the sport, not only for his physical dominance on the court but also for the humility and grace he displayed throughout his career.
