Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the former captain of Arsenal, talks about the rupture with Arteta that resulted in the transfer: “You put a knife in my back”

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has shared his side of the story regarding his fallout with Mikel Arteta during his time at Arsenal. Speaking to Colinterview, the former Gunners captain revealed that after returning from a trip to Spain, Arteta lashed out at him during a team meeting, despite knowing the reason for his travel. Aubameyang explained that Arteta shouted at him, accusing him of “putting a knife in his back” and expressing disappointment in his actions given the team’s struggles. Aubameyang chose not to respond, realizing that engaging would only escalate the situation.

The next day, Aubameyang received a call from the club’s doctor, informing him that Arteta no longer wanted him at the club. The striker admitted to being confused by the entire situation, as he felt that Arteta had never directly communicated that he was no longer part of his plans.

Aubameyang also acknowledged that he played a role in forcing his move to Barcelona during the January 2022 transfer window. He was excluded from the matchday squads due to disciplinary reasons and was frustrated with Arteta. He explained that while he accepted some responsibility for the situation, he felt that his actions could be understood if people took a human perspective. Aubameyang spent a month training alone before his move to Barcelona, a time that was emotionally difficult for him.

Following his time at Barcelona, where he scored 13 goals in 24 appearances, Aubameyang had a brief stint at Chelsea before moving to Marseille and later Al-Qadsiah earlier this year.
