“Maybe I’ll go down to flyweight and challenge for his belt” – Jonathan Haggerty open to Superlek trilogy in ONE Championship

Depending on how things play out in his upcoming world title clash with Superlek, two-sport king Jonathan Haggerty may be enticed to move down to flyweight for a trilogy bout with ‘The Kicking Machine’ on martial arts’ biggest global stage.

Six years ago, Superlek scored a second-round TKO victory over ‘The General’ under the Yokkao banner.

On Friday, September 6, Haggerty will have the chance to even the series when he puts his ONE bantamweight Muay Thai world championship on the line against Superlek at ONE 168 in The Mile High City—Denver, Colorado.

Already holding the ONE flyweight kickboxing world title, Superlek has his sights set on leaving The Centennial State as a two-sport titleholder. On the other hand, if Haggerty comes on top, he may be enticed to move back down to flyweight in a bid to close out their trilogy and take the Thai’s 26 pounds of gold.

“I always think about [returning to flyweight],” Haggerty told ONE. “I mean, my dad always tells me I can do it, and who knows, once I beat Superlek, maybe I’ll go down to flyweight and challenge for his belt.”

Jonathan Haggerty continues to take the bantamweight division by storm

After making a name for himself at flyweight, capturing the division’s top prize, and going toe-to-toe with Rodtang Jitmuangnon in a pair of instant classics, Jonathan Haggerty made the move to bantamweight.

Thus far, he hasn’t lost a single fight in the weight class.

Finding his footing against Russian standout Vladimir Kuzmin, ‘The General’ shook the bantamweight foundation to its core with a stunning first-round knockout of Thai icon Nong-O Hama to claim the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai title.

Seven months later he returned to capture the vacant ONE bantamweight kickboxing crown via a second-round KO of bantamweight MMA champion Fabricio Andrade.

Already bagging his first successful title defense against Felipe Lobo in February, Haggerty will look to extend his streak to seven in a row and hand Superlek his first loss in the art of eight limbs under the ONE Championship banner.
