Jonny Evans thinks Manchester United’s shattered confidence will get the boost it needs if they win the FA Cup.
The defender for Northern Ireland, who defeated Manchester City on Saturday at Wembley, concedes that 2024 will be a summer of transition, with manager Erik ten Hag in danger.
After making his Old Trafford comeback in the summer of 2023, Evans (36), who entered the game as a second-half substitute, expressed his happiness at winning a trophy at the end of the 2023–2024 season.
“I didn’t know where I was going to be at last preseason, but I can’t complain because that was my 30th appearance this season,” he remarked.
“Obviously the League position wasn’t great, but it was amazing to win the FA Cup.”On the eve of the Final, rumors circulated that Ten Hag would lose his job regardless of the outcome.
It comes after an otherwise miserable 2023–24 season for United, who finished 31 points behind City following their lowest-ever Premier League season.Evans responded, “Hopefully, we get that consistency in the playing squad,” when asked what has to happen next.
“Having spent a lot of time in the football world, I know that many changes are likely to come.”Hopefully, after winning the FA Cup, this will give us that little bit of confidence.””I think everyone is aware that the new owners have a big job to do in terms of refreshing the squad.”
Evans expressed his desire that United continues to support Ten Hag, calling him “amazing.”He also gave the Dutchman credit for handling the 2023–24 season well, considering it had been marred by setbacks, injuries, and concerns about his future.
He continued, saying, “The manager has handled it incredibly well; he’s got on with it.””Every training session, every game, every setback—and there seem to have been so many—he’s just taken it on the chin and carried on.””It’s likely that he’s only now seeing his starting team, or nearly there, perform on the field, and they’ve delivered.”
